Is it OK to hang a big picture on a small wall?

I bought a larger picture that I want to hang on a smaller wall. The wall will have about an inch of space on each side of it once the picture is hung. I think it looks good but I am worried that I might be commiting some interior design faux pas. Is this OK to do or not?
